Compare the porosity and the permeability of an aquifer with the porosity and the permeability of a layer of s

Porosity is the fraction of total volume (of rock) that is pore space and permebility is the flowability of the formation (rock).

An effective aquifer should have high porosity to contain large amount of water and high permeability so that water can flow through it.

Shale, in general is known as impermeable (having no or very low permeability) rock even though some types of shales can have high porosity.
