How does the structure of a cheek cell relate to its function(Protective Layer)?

A cheek cell, a stratified squamous epithelium, consists of squamous (flattened) epithelial cells arranged in layers upon a basement membrane. Epithelium is well suited to areas in the body subject to constant abrasion, as the layers can be sequentially sloughed off and replaced before the basement membrane is exposed. How does the structure of a cheek cell relate to its function(Protective Layer)?
It is flat and smooth ....kinda looks like a fried egg. Once covered with mucus it a very effective protective smooth outer layer of the mouth. You can feel them when you rub your tongue over the surface.
