On Photoshop, I ocasionally get a message that the Layer is Locked. How do you unlock a layer?

Occasionally, when I try to enhance or adjust an image on Photoshop, I find that the paintbrush, pencil or any other tool, do not work because the ';layer is locked';. I tried Photoshop Help, but cannot find any info on ';unlocking a layer';. Please help.On Photoshop, I ocasionally get a message that the Layer is Locked. How do you unlock a layer?
Go to the Window menu, make sure that Layers is checked. In the layers palette, look for a small lock icon next to the layer you're trying to work on. Select the layer, anc click the lock icon in the layers palette (at the top or bottom of the palette). but how do you keep the layers unlocked? so when you open a pic you can move it freely in the workspace. Report Abuse

on the layer pallet there is a little padlock icon, when its closed the layer cannot be changed. Click the lock to open it and unlock the layer.
The padlock icon in the Layer palette is used to lock and unlock layers. A locked layer cannot be edited. Click the padlock to toggle locking on and off. To unlock a background layer, right-click it and then click OK.
